Conducting Fellowship Program

Tacoma Concert Band is pleased to announce the 1st annual “Robert Musser Conducting Fellowship”. This award will be granted to an emerging band director who exhibits the skills and potential to become a strong musical leader in our community.

The recipient of the Robert Musser Conducting Fellowship will receive the following:


Instruction: One academic year mentorship from the Tacoma Concert Band conductor. During these sessions the student will receive instruction in:


      a) music selection

      b) score study

      c) rehearsal techniques

      d) conducting


Resources: In addition to receiving instruction from the conductor, the recipient will be encouraged to use members of the Tacoma Concert Band as resources. This could include help with grade level specific music selection, “teaching tips”, or classroom instrument clinics.


Performance: The recipient will have the opportunity to rehearse and conduct a music selection for the final Tacoma Concert Band performance of the season.


Cash Award: The recipient will receive a $1,500 cash award to be used for professional development. (The Tacoma Concert Band reserves the right to approve use of this award).

Requirements for the Fellowship

The applicant must:


  • Be an active director in their 1st through 6th year of teaching band at the time of application.

  • Schedule two meetings with the Fellowship Committee: one after receiving the Fellowship and the second after the winter concert.

  • Schedule sessions with the Tacoma Concert Band director at mutually convenient times.

  • Attend Wednesday night Tacoma Concert Band rehearsals. (To be arranged with the Tacoma Concert Band Conductor).

  • Exhibit a desire for improvement, based on the application essay.
