REQUIREMENTS (read carefully)

Annual Student Soloist Competition

The Tacoma Concert Band is a nationally acclaimed

community symphonic band dedicated to providing its

audiences with the highest quality classical and

contemporary music. The Student Soloist Competition

reflects our desire to recognize and encourage

talented young musicians in the Puget Sound area.


We are inviting high school brass, woodwind and

percussion students to audition and participate in the

29th annual Student Soloist Competition.


  • Any Puget Sound-area high school woodwind, brass or percussion student who has received the recommendation of their high school band director.


  • Participants must be members in good standing of the school band program.


  • Home-schooled students are encouraged to participate.


  • Perform as a soloist with one of the most respected community concert bands in the nation in the Pantages Theater on April 23, 2022


  • Receive coaching in style, interpretation and stage presence from the Conductor, Gerard Morris, Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of Puget Sound.


  • Receive the Wayne Timmerman Prize of $300.


  • Use this opportunity to gain experience to compete for regional and state solo competitions and college scholarships.


     •  The student must perform a live solo audition. The

         piece performed must be of high musical and

         technical substance and quality. The piece must be

         approved in advance of the competition by the

         Tacoma Concert Band


     •  The piece or movement from a piece must be performed in

         its entirety, cuts will not be permitted.


  • The performance time of the solo must not exceed 12 minutes.


  • The soloist must be accompanied by piano at the audition.  

         The soloist is responsibile for providing their own



  • The solo performed at the audition must be the one intended for the performance with the Tacoma Concert Band.


  • The piece selected must have a band

          accompaniment easily and readily available to

          borrow or purchase. Music available as “rental only”

          will not be acceptable. It is the responsibility of the

          soloist to research the availability (publisher or

          source to borrow) of the band arrangement and the

          cost to purchase. If the selected piece is not

          approved by the Tacoma Concert Band for the          

          competition, the student must select a different



  • The student must be available for rehearsals and the concert on April 23, 2022.


    •    Not all applicants will be selected to audition





-Applications postmarked or submitted electronically

no later than 11/12/2021


-Live audition:

University of Puget Sound, 12/4/2021


-Rehearsals at the Broadway Center:

Wednesdays, March 30, April 6, 13, 20

(Soloist’s Time TBA)


-Concert at the Pantages Theater:

April 23rd at 7:30pm




Signatures may be required at the time of audition

if the student is selected.
